Did some research, talked to a actual mecahnic today as well as search online.
The clutch fan is supposed to engage when engine temp reaches 200-210*F, run until engine is under 200 and then dis-engage.
Yes you can install a engine fan backwards and no with will not pull air if the blades have been reversed.
Now here is the reallt interesting thing...a fan clutch cannot be stored laying down, it MUST be oriented on the shelf the way it is installed, so it must be vertical.
If it has been laying flat, or you are not sure if it has been laying flat then you MUST stand it vertical for at least 24 hours prior to installation.
So, what happened was I bought a perfectly good used fan clutch, layed it on my work bench were it sat laying down for several months, I then installed it without the required vertical hang time and so it was toast from the moment that I put it on the truck.
$70 wasted because I did not know any better.
Now the price of a used one is $125, brand new from AB is $150, brand new from AutoZone with LLT warrenty is $105.
I will be making a trip to AutoZone later tonight and then install it Mon.

No, it is filled with silicon, like a fake boob, I knew that already but never knew that it had to stay vertical.

 

Well, you got to respect that.

 

Yeah nothing worse than sagging silicon.

 

I must add that the way that i found out that my fan was mounted in the right direction was I found a DI for sale at a car lot, opened the hood and looked at the fan.

 

Does having it made of silicone make it harder for you to keep it upright, or wait, are we still talking about fan blades?

 

It's always up right, silicone or not.
The fan blades are stiff too.

 

Ok, so last night I was messing with my fan trying to get it off so I can repalce the fan clutch, descided to leave it alone until I got the new clutch.
Well now today the fan clutch works just fine, when the hell?
That saves me $100 though so I'm happy with that.

Second.. WTF with tthe storing the Fan clutch "Vertically"
I mean once you install it.. isnt it Vertical?? I cant wrap my hand around the physics of this.. when you install it do the bolts somehow penetrate the silicone and not allow it to return to normal?? Why would it not correct itself by hanging vertically on the front of your engine??
