Filled up with high test and lost 3.9 mpg!!! Has anyone experienced this?

So have you filled it back up to check your mileage against what you actually put in it?

When the Ethanol started, I hit up a station in KC on a trip. My gas needle was all over the place. Turns out that station was not blending its fuel right and I ended up with a mixture that was closer to E-85. Since then I only hit the stations I know, or a Phillips ( I work for CoP).

My bet it is the ethanol. There is a shell station that I go to that is always more expensive than everywhere else but they don't have any ethanol. I always get my rover and sport bike fuel there. Low grade without ethanol will deffinitely run the same if not better than high test ethanol gas.

I keep a close eye on mpg and I do the math on every tank. I filled up today with mid 89 today (21.7 gal.) at Exxon. I am hoping it was just bad gas. The arguement for the high test gas being old at a discount station made sense so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Frank4-here is a lesson I learned, whenever I go to a unfamiliar gas station, like when we are out of town, I use regular gas because you dont know how old the premium gas is.
We were on a off roading trip and filled up in Small Town USA with premium from Joe's Discount Gas and Crab Legs and the truck ran like crap until that gas was gone because it was stale.
Buying your gas at a grocery store you are getting crap gas to start with, then add in that nobody who buys gas at a grocery store gives a rats butt about the quality of the gas so they are never going to sell any premium gas, so it's all going to go stale.
You get what you pay for when it comes to fuel.
I use Shell 93 octane 98% of the time and I get 300+ miles per tank as a daily driver.
If I buy gas from Speedway (discount gas)then I get less than 300 miles from a tank of gas.

I love the way the people pushing the agenda talk about the benefits of "ethanol". I really get a kick out of it when they use Indy Racing as an example because they went to 100% ethanol for fuel - I REALLY love that they ALWAYS fail to mention those engines cost about $250,000.00 each and only get 8-10 mpg!

Not to mention that they were built to run on only ethanol.

I am all for cleaner air and I am a tree hugger but how does lowering the MPG so you need to use more save anything?

you are absolutely right Spike !!!
and unfortunately thats exactly why the gas companys don't seem to be complaining, they'll make up for the loss in sales due to better fuel milage vehicles , with gas that gets worse mileage

One of the worst thing you can do is drive your truck till the red light comes on or the egine dies, you are burning up your fuel pump.
As for your drop in mileage, you should always be running 91 t 93 octane if you don't want to carbon up your valve stems and need to do a valve job.
Keep running the good gas and you'll see you are OK.

Jeez, I use the wrong gas AND I don't leave enough in the tank... I can't do anything right.

Anyway the fresh tank (89 octane) is spending at the normal rate, must have been bad gas.
