I would not have spent the money to find out which sleeves dropped either.

I agree spike..but what if the head gasket or heads where not done right? Dont liners that slip make noise? I had the situation on my 95 RR 4.0 gems engine. I had the head gaskets done and it still smoked white after they did it. We were all stumped. I took a bottel of cargo block sealer as I had nothing to loose and low and behold the white smoke and overheating went away after about 5 minutes. the mehanics couldnt believe it. I dont know if they screwed it up or what but i drove it fo another 100,000 miles without a problem. This was about 7 years ago so i know they have alot more products out now. It's not the solution but if you dont plan on doing top hat liners in your new engine, you have nothing to loose..

Good luck, Chris

They advertise steel seal and i heard it really works...

Don't you love that block sealer? I used a similar product by K&W called "mechanic in a can" years ago on a 86 Pontiac. Followed the directions exactly and it worked. I had nothing to lose so I tried it. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna go buy every car I see with a blown head gasket and turn a profit!

You have done all that and have only driven it 20 miles since buying it?

What did you do as far as checking it over BEFORE you bought it?

Very Scary. It will be interesting to see what you eventually find.

I thought the same danny.... Head gaskets are a slow process that will take a bit of time and symptoms... I would think that if and when you bought it, after it got to temputure, you would see that it is over heating..

I too have heard that Steel Seal really works.

I would find someone who could pull the heads for like $100 (I would actually do it myself but maybe he cant or does not want to mess with it and that is 100% ok)
But no way in hell I would spend $500, if the engine is toast then he's out a paycheck.
If its just a bad headgasket job then he's halfway there.

Guys - I rebuild engines, work on ALL of my cars, and am very mechanically inclined...

Saying that - the dealership was THE LAST option seeing that I was new to LR's and it seems that everyone and their mother is having overheating issues...

I have pulled the heads (as mentioned) and changed the head gaskets (as mentioned) and had the heads checked (as mentioned) and they were fine. I reinstalled everything (with new bolts BTW) and it fired right up.

Without the chemical test - I really had to 'guess' with what was wrong and started changing things one by one in the order of the 'likely suspect''.

The car was literally left at a mechanic (who bought it for $1000) and he tried to see what the problem was before I got my hands on it. Who knows, he might have made matters worse by running it constantly as it kept overheating.

Anyway, I am shopping an new(er) engine and will have to swap it out. No biggie, I have done (4) engine swaps in my 20 year of driving (one as little as 3 weeks ago) and these engines are pretty simple all considering.
