Default Finally found one!! Picked up a 2000 today!

She has 117K on the clock, has the heated seats and windshield, HK, ACE and Sunroofs. Looks like it had extensive work done last year. I have the service invoice from last year with $3K in parts alone. Things replaced included: Brakes, battery, plugs, wires, head gasket, temp sensors, all gaskets, mass air flow, idle air control valve, radiator, thermostat, starter, timing chain and wiper motor.
Apparently it was a guy who bought it for towing around 4 wheelers for the family and some off road stuff. After a bunch of a money into it, realized he still needed 2 vehicles to take him/people/stuff where he needed, so traded in both on a new truck.
I've tested out a bunch of Disco's over the past few months, and this one seemed in good shape overall and ran nice. Only a few small issues:
  • A small leak from one of the radiator hoses (not dripping, but you could see the crust around the rip and smell it).
  • The front aux lights on the brush guard do not work. Not sure if it is the switch, the bulbs or somewhere in between there
  • There is a tap from the engine in the higher RPM range. Seemed most I drove had the same sound, this one seemed a bit louder but not severe.
  • Trans shifts good, 4-Low works nice. Has a bit of a vibration accelerating hard though (nothing major). I'm thinking I want a qualified eye to look at the drive shafts, and need advice on getting the "serviceable" units I have seen mentioned here.
I will take any and all advice and tips on any of the issues. I'm going to be using this a rig as a ski/snowboard ride, for mountain biking, kayaking, etc. This forum has already been invaluable during the shopping process (saved me from picking up an 03 in the bad-vin range too).
As far as things I will do, tomorrow I will do a quick oil change (any preference on the Synthetic? I'm a Mobil 1 fan in my other rides) and see if I could source the hose I need. Otherwise, all the fluids are new last year so I should be good there. Anything else?

Looks good. Also looks like it's sagging. Needs a lift

I use Mobil 1 turbo truck diesel 5w40 and the m-301 filter.

Some additional questions too for the Rover Gods here:
First, any particular coolant to use to top up the system? I will go by what the manual calls for, but figure in the last 11 years maybe others have used something different.
Next, is this line from the coolant tank supposed to have this break/adapter in it? It appears to be fuel line, so I'm guessing it is not original to begin with. This is where one of the leaks is that drips down onto the valve cover. Can I just get a new solid piece without the coupler or whatever that is to replace it, or cut new pieces and keep that in the center?

Also, any places to replace the following hose from or anyone buy one recently? You could see where the split is by the joint

Coolant I use is the standard GM Dex-cool. GM trademark I think. The book and filler will say only use "OAT" (Organic acid tech) and if you ask for that at most auto part stores the counter guy will stare at you with a blank look. Dex-cool is OAT, as are all of the Prestone will mix with anything ones. (Although correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's technically HOAT)

You don't want to mix regular antifreeze unless you think goo cools better than liquid ;-)

As for aux lights on grill, turn on high beams and then press button for aux lights. I found out that is how to turn mine on.

Get some heater hose from Napa to replace that leaky joined one, you don't need the join. Don't mix coolants, if you don't know what is in there then flush the coolant and replace with something like Peak. People are replacing the OAT with Peak nowadays, it's a bit like the "which oil is best" debate.
There are hundreds of posts about the front drive shaft, check the Write Ups and How Tos at the top of the section, all the info you need is right there.

I'll have to do some color matching on the coolant for now and hopefully guess right. I figure I don't want to do a full flush until I take care of all the leaks, but will need to add some. Looks like it had a new radiator so I'm 10 years ahead of the game on buildup at least!

Yeah, I had tried that one right away before I even got it. Still nothing. Gotta dig a bit. Can I just put a 12V jump to the wires on the lights to rule out a bulb maybe? I need to mess with it a bit I guess.

The main reason I had asked was because I have never heard of such a thing either. I've been a VW/Audi guy, and those have been the only cars I did a flush myself with and those take the pink G5 (I think) stuff.

just use a universal coolant for now like Peak Universal. Then when it warms up flush all that crap out and put in your coolant of choice. I like the Peak Universal. but others will tell you a million tales about dexcool, g05 and everything else under the sun.

i woudl do a 60k maitenance on it (all fluids), i would switch the oil to Rotella T6, make sure you get that drive shaft rebuilt before it destroys the truck.

After a complete service then i would look at the truck and see if there are any problems still existing.
