Default First time!

I took my disco offroading for the first time last night. It was a really fun experience.
What would be the best way to get a lift?
Buy a lift kit or take it to a shop?
Thanks!

The best way to get a iift is to buy one and then install it.
www.atlanticbritish.com is a good place to start shopping for one.
DiscoMike knows where to get one cheaper though.

What year? D1---D2?

Call me crazy, but I'd throw the first $300 into Ujoints, tune up,tie rod ends, brakes, etc.

The thing is more than capable bone stock,(better than some modified 4x4's)

But I'd want to make sure I got home every time, not snap a ujoint & suffer the humiliation of my buddy's F-150 towing me--

IMHO
luck,greg

Before you go worrying about a lift make sure your truck is in tip top running condition. That's more important to a fun day on the trails than a lift. If you're not mechanically inclined find a LR mechanic you can trust to go through the truck and point out the problems. How many miles on your truck? Being a 98 you're probably ready for new O2 sensors as well as plugs and wires. Use Magnecor 8mm wires and the plugs of your choice. I'm really happy with Bosch Platinum +4s. Go through and complete everything on the 60K service list before you worry about a lift.

As stated previously, the Disco is one of the most capable off road vehicles in stock form. And add in how luxurious they are and you've got a vehicle jeeps envy.

When the time comes for a lift, go to Land Rover Repair Forum's store site for the best price. A complete Old Man Emu 2" HD lift will cost about $800 delivered to your door. That's front and rear springs, shocks and a steering stabilizer. A shop that knows Rovers should be able to install the lift in 4-5 hours if you can't handle it yourself. I recently installed the OME lift on my 97 and I love it.

I agree with these guys, make sure it's in top running condition first. Then do some more off-roading like it is. When you're first starting out even off-roading a stock vehicle is fun. Use that time to learn about the rover and when you're ready for a lift you can do it yourself. There's a lot of good info on here.

And once it's in top running condition and you plan to off-road regularly, buy more agressive tires. Tires can make a huge difference in a mud pit, and it is the simplest modification you can make to get the best of your truck off-road. Be careful tu buy the right size though.... 245-75-r16 are the biggest you can fit under a stock Disco.
