Default flashing odometer

I am considering buying a 99 disco II with 88k. The truck is extremely clean with descent service history, however the odometer is flashing. The manual says nothing about this (in relation to needing service). Does anyone know why this might happen and how to fix it?
thanks

The flashing odometer indicates something has been tampered with. Check with CarFax.

Carfax is clean and the vehicle is a 1 owner. The owner told me he had recently installed the factory brush guard & safari lights and the cluster had to be removed to run the wires into the proper spot. When he reinstalled the cluster the odometer was blinking. Can the dealer check this and/or repair the problem?
thanks again,
Brian

Brian,

The Dealer should be able to tell you what is going on. I would be very leary... Check your PM's.

the truck is at the dealer for pre-purchase inspection, hopefully they will be able to see if anything was tampered with. Thanks for your help
