I think to put the torque converter back in - press it with your hands backward and spin it and then clunk - goes in.
Measure the inches it is in there from the lip of the transmission before you start and put that measurement on the garage wall to keep all honest.
Plus take a picture with your phone and maybe scribe a line on the aluminum of the transmission so that line lines up with a known point on the torque converter and you can visually confirm you have put it back in there OK.

Ashcroft sell a heavy duty flex plate for the TD5 but I'm not sure whether they sell one for the V8.

Ashcroft Transmissions

This is a standard Rover flex plate but it might be worth a telephone call.

The genuine flexplate is pretty flimsy. anything would be an improvement.

I may do that, I was thinking it had to turn and click in like three times, so was kind of worried I may not get it back just right. I measured and from a straight edge across the engine mating surface of the bellhousing to the flat surface on the torque converter where the flexplate bolts up is 1" so if it is seated all the way now I can use that as a reference. I will also check to see if the weight is still on it.

I'll check today to see what my measurement is and post that. I've had no time this weekend to work on my rebuild.
