Default Fluid Change

I new to the world of LR and Disco I just purchased mine a week ago so the day I got it home I changed the oil The motor was still hot from the 100 mile drive home.

Took down today to get the trans flushed they told me it take some specail ATF The price was $275.00 to $300.00 I though it kinda of high my self they told me it like $15.00 a Ot.

I looked up the ATF in the ownner Manual it said Dexron III so whats the skinney did they try to pull a fast one on me I have not paid or had it done yet But Dexron III is a standered ATF.

Which ATF should I use
I might just do it my self.

I also took it down to the local drive shaft rebuild place he on drugs what he wanted to rebuild the front drive shaft I can buy a new one for what he wanted to do the work.

He also pointed out the rubber rear flex Thing for a U joint i did not like that I put some normal U joint in there.

They are probably confused. Some of the range rovers use esso fluid (like the expensive BMWs.). It's like $30 a quart.

So the standered AFT will work your saying.

How about the transfer case fluid what kind as long as going to change the fluid might as do it all.

Look at DiscoMikes 60k service. Use 85w/140 synthetic.
The way I did my transmission "flush" was 3 drain and fills. On the 3rd one I changed the filter.

You can do the tranny fluid yourself. It's not hard at all.

xfer case gear oil is kinda hard. But you can do it. You will need some RTV to reseal the case plate thats all . Search the forums for the guide/walk-thru.

I did my tranny and xfer fluids together since you have to be up under the truck.

Order a new shaft if he is going to charge you that much. You can put the new one on yourself. It's not hard.

Only thing I had the shop do (in my case Firestone), was the coolant. I wanted to have that flushed well and the system pressure tested. They charge 100 bucks, which I had no problems with.

Congrats on the purchase!

The flex coupler on the rear drive shaft...it came that way from the factory, Land Rover has been using the flex coupler for 60 years, tell that mechanic good bye and find someone else.

Just finshed up rebuilding the front drive shaft it cost me $80.00 and a couple hours of my own labor Yes I have a 12 ton press and air tools for grinding the center bearing out, that makes life much easyer.
I stil waiting for my New Rear driveshaft full U Joint conversion to show up that was anouther $294.00 shipped.
