My steering gearbox leaks out of the bottom pitman arm seals. I flush mine everyday when I drive it. (LOL) I hope to get a replacement after Christmas. I tried to replace the seals, but the pitman arm is fused to the shaft. I bent a puller trying to get it off.

I know this is a super old thread but I have to ask. I am getting ready to do this in my 2001 d2 and I have heard that you need special power steering fluid? Is this true or will any power steering fluid work and if I can use any kind what is the best for the system?

Thanks all

You knew yet you made us go thru a near 4 year old thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How are you going to flush it, you need p/s fluid, synthetic if you can find it, 4 quarts. Do you also have ACE and how many miles on the engine?

So... while we're at it, how often do you change the power steering fluid?

Don't you have an owners manual, it is considered to be every 30,000 but every 20,000 seems to be better cause these pumps are prone to failing on old fluid.

A power steering fluid flush is not recommended by Land Rover per the owners manual.
So how often you do it depends on you.
I do it to every car I buy used, I do a complete flush, add good fluid and never change it again.
And remember that you cannot judge the condition of the fluid by the color, you would need to have it tested in a lab.
My work van has over 240,000 miles on it, original power steering fluid and pump and steering box, I'm a delivery driver, the power steering gets a good work out everyday.
So, how often you want to change it depends on you.

Thanks guys, I didn't mean to stir anything up, I was just looking for advice from good sources. I trust everything that get from the people on this forum...well most everything. My truck has around 152,000 and does not have ace.

So it sounds as though I might as well change it, while I'm flushing & changing everything else. Thanks for the advice!

Just remember if your pulling the return line to hold it in the bucket as there's quite a bit of pressure. Don't ask me how I found out

Would siphoning the system be as effective, and less messy?
