I was changing the oil last night and noticed this hole. Drivers side, back of the oil pan. Is this supposed to be covered? Also, what's it for?

Yep v common. There is a rubber plug that is supposed to be in both sides (there are 2 holes exactly like the one pictured). causes no harm without it though, most have rotten and fall out. On my list of "to replace" when I buy a disco.

(addendum: I recently bought a low mileage 39K miles 2000 Disco, very well maintained, 1 owner from CA, etc. And when I looked under, I chuckled as both of these plugs were missing. I believe this rubber just rots over time)

Thanks! Good to know. Do you know what the purpose is?

These were missing from mine as well, it's a cheap and easy fix- they just pop right in. I replaces them ASAP because I figured the last thing I would want is a rock or something getting flung up in there. Even though the chance is pretty small for the cost and effort it was worth fixing it for me.

EDIT: HA! I just realized that the linked forum post above went to my original question I posted on this forum.

yes, replace them. AND don't push them in too hard/fast. they will just pop out the other side into the bell housing!
