Foldable roof top tent ramp (with pics)
I made a foldable ramp to get my roof top tent on the top of my D2, thought I would post it here in case anyone else wants to copy/be inspired by it. Basically its 2 7' 2x4 lengths hinged together and braced with mending plates in the middle. The mending plates are secured through the 2x4's with 1/4-20 bolts and wingnuts so you can set it up and take it down without tools. 14' gives an ideal angle (at least for my tent) and I was able to push it up without it sliding down all by myself. I'm happy to clarify anything- ask away!
One half of the ramp.
Both halves secured together. Note the cross braces are "unevenly" spaced so that they don't interfere when its folded up.
Closeup of the middle.
Closeup of the hinge, I needed to add an additional set of mending plates above the one pictured.
One half of the plate secured with 1/4-20 nuts and the other by wingnuts so you can undo them by hand.
Hinge detail, again- I had to add another mending plate for additional strength.
Close up of the cross brace. IMPORTANT BUILD NOTE: I elevated the ramp with a shim so the cross brace is set slightly below the ramp so the tent wouldn't snag on it. Make sure this is on the NON-HINGE side of the ramp.
Some bike hooks at the end so I could hang it on the truck...somehow...
Up we go!
It was easy to push up alternating sides with each push. The angle was shallow enough where it didn't require a lot of effort and the tent didn't slide backwards in between pushes.
Up on top!
