Default Font driveshaft removal and fuel economy.

I bought some gresable u-joints a couple months ago and still have not gotten around to swapping them out since my frint driveshaft was changed with another not long before I bought it. Now I am hearing that the cheaper $15 joints I bought are not really strong and I am leaning towards getting a pro just to do the whole thing. What is the risk in putting these cheap gresable joints on? Any recommendations?

One on the reasons the Rovers are down on economy is that they are permanent all wheel drive. Being that I will be removing my front driveshaft soon (I have installed the CDL linkage on my DII) I am curious what kind of mileage improvement I will see running on just the rear shaft. Has anyone measured it out or would care to take a guess?

So you got the cheapco !!!! Well, had the job done myself a few weeks back from a CV and driveshaft specialist, and this guy was refusing to even order the cheapco, andsaid that he recommended eitherthe precision, or even better the spicer u-joints. Since I was doing this for peace of mind, I went with the better and called it a day. I think it cost me some $60.00 more all together, and I think that is pretty cheap for peace of mind.

As far as fuel economy when driving without the front shaft, I'm curious also to see how much the awd is responsible for the bad m.p.g.

Our 4wheel drive system is not the reason the blue book prices are down, most people with 4wheeleres wish they had out set up with the CDL.

From what I can tell any U-joints that you swap out the OEM joint to is an upgrade as long as they have grease fittings.

Now getting to the "taking the front shaft out". Why would you do that? I'm pretty sure the gain (if any) in mpg's would not out weigh the stess on the remainder of the driveline doing all the work when designed to be Full time FWD. Just my thought, could be wrong.

Other have larger rear drive lines for the part-time 4x4
usage and that the diffs also,, I have had my share.

I would only use one drive line to get me to get the other
fixed (out in the middle of ....) or have it towed.

The diffs are not strong enough to handle removing one of the shafts. They are engineered to be full time 4WD, so the diffs and axles are smaller to reduce weight. Whatever you might save on gas, you will spend on a new rear end...

If you need to drive it to the shop and back to drop off the front DS then I would think that it is ok to drive with only one DS.
But it will destroy the rest of the drivetrain if you do it for to many miles.

Unless I'm the one that misunderstood, he is saying that he is having his front driveshaft's u-joints changed, and since he has the CDL, he is able to keep on driving the vehicle while the driveshaft is at the shop. And he was wondering if the fact that the driveshaft is removed, will cause the truck to be more fuel efficient. I don't think that he has any intention to keep it like that......Or does he ??? I was just also curious to see how much better it would be mileage wise without the front shaft. Just for the sake or experimentation. I have the CDL also, but didn't have the guts to drive it and spent a whole morning at the shop waiting for my Disco to be ready.

I think you are right and I mis-understood. If that is the case then he would be fine I think.

I have two other vehicles to drive do the Rover proberly not even move while it is getting done. I was just curious.

I also see what you guys are saying and for my piece of mind I will go with some high end joints just to be sure. Planning a 6000 mile roudtrip to Prudhoe bay this summer.
