The best thing you can do while welding...is keep the ground as close/clean/secure to the area that you're welding as possible. It keeps the "path" short. Usually, where folks run into problems, they connect the ground to a spot they've cleaned/ground down to exposed steel...then jump around welding all over the frame. Next thing you know, the battery ground cable becomes a secondary ground route and the welder uses that "path" instead of welder ground lead. Plus, the closer you keep your ground to work area, the better the penetration you'll get. Plus, keeping the ground "path" close...helps keep you from becoming a ground path.
l've probably welding on hundreds of vehicles over my forty years...and never disconnected battery ground or ECU...and have never smoked one.
Actually, l've only seen it once. But, the guy did exactly what l described. Clamped ground to steel front bumper and started welding behind drivers door. ECU bit the dust.
