Default Free Disco? lookin’ a gift horse in the mouth

So I had someone offer me a 2003 Discovery 2 on the cheap

and all I have to do is get it in a small town in Kentucky. That’s roughly 300 miles from my cabin in the mountains of West Virginia.
This is what I know about it. I don’t know the mileage. It was a daily driver until the serpentine tensioner failed and the belt went south. A new belt and tensioner is included in the deal. The rig was flat bedded back to the current owners house where her daughter lost the only key. That was three years ago.
Fast forward to today and all I have to do is get a flatbed and haul it home. I will worry about getting it moving on my own property as the current owners don’t want my old *** messing with it on their watch, they just want it gone.
The motor didn’t overheat when the belt went or so I’m told so I have my fingers crossed on that one. I need the key to at least unlock the trans and steering to maneuver it onto and off of the trailer.I also realize that I need the key fob also to start the vehicle.
At the moment this is the question I have for y’all, how do I go about getting a key and fob made for a vehicle is 300 miles away. Do I need to order the key and fob off the inter-web and then have a locksmith cut me a key on site? I just need the easiest way for me to have a key when I show up on her doorstep to flatbed it home and be able to get it running from there.
Any help would be appreciated and thanks for your help in advance. “GTP”

In a pinch you don't need a key to move it. Pull up PRND321 and push solenoid back and shift into N. Key wise to start = also not needed. Remove steering column cover, remove tamper screws holding ignition switch to column. Use a flat blade as a punch to loosen them. Once the entire ignition switch is off your steering will no longer be locked, and remove the black electrical part from the ignition switch and simply turn with a flat blade screw driver to start.

I’m gonna need a key and would rather not take apart anything until I have to. Should I order the key blank and programmer and then have the key cut by a local locksmith?

You might have to offer proof of ownership to get a key from the dealer but with the VIN any LR dealer can get you a key and fob.

Any title involved in the sale? Get some proof of ownership. Ask for any service records. Ask for all the paper receipts they have. Ask if anything is stuffed away in a garage, closet, attic.

When you say "on the cheap." I hope you mean FREE or $300-500 absolute tops. And by the way, my motto is, try to buy any Land Rover you can as long as it isn't rusted out or wrecked.

I was meaning to get it started onsite, and onto a trailer easily not as a forever fix. The column is held together via 3 screws from the bottom and simply pulls apart once the screws are out. Sometimes getting the key cut from the dealer can be a bust if the ignition switch has been replaced over the life of the LR. Also pulling up the PRND321 trim to gain access to the Shifter Interlock Solenoid is a 5sec thing.

I used to carry a RRC/D1 and D2 ignition switch harness in my truck whenever I went looking at 500.00 LR's. They'd start with oh it hasn't started in years due to a busted ignition or oh we lost the key. I'd simply go to my truck grab the correct harness, open the access panel on the drivers side, and unplug the unit in the vehicle and plug mine in and once a jump box was attached twist it with the end of a LR key or screw driver & a few of em started right up and drove either out of the ranch up to the main road or up onto a trailer while the previous owner was like WTH....

If you decide not to take it, I'm just a skip across the line in VA and I'd be interested.

However, if I were you I would do (and have done) as Best suggested. The column is easy to open up and get the steering freed up that way.
