Default Front DriveTrain Coming apart - should the replacement really be so expensive?

Hi all,
Took my car into the dealer today (LR Discover II, 88,000miles, 2003) and was informed by them that the right motor mount had collapsed and that quote "the front driveshaft is litterally falling apart," I have two questions I'd like to ask if ya'all dont mind.

First, I had had my car serviced a little bit ago and neither of these issued were mentioned. Are these issues possibly at all related? For instance if I didn't replace the motor mount would a new driveshaft be at risk of doing the same thing?

Second, my dealer quoted the parts for a new driveshaft at around $980 not including labor. After searching around online for people that have done this themselves and parts stores this seems a bit steep for a new driveshaft, are these dealers trying to "shaft" me too with these prices?

Thanks in advance, any advice is truly appreciated!

you can get your shaft rebuilt for about 200 or buy a tom woods for about 400 with shipping do not buy anything from the dealer they are a rip off and they will put the same style shaft back in and it will go bad again find a indie shop that services rovers and c what they say about the motor mount

Yes, for $980 the dealer is definitely giving you the shaft...and I don't mean the kind on your truck...

Default do it yourself

Motor mounts are $25.00 a piece so do both as you have to lift the engine up about 4 inches.... Its a couple hour job for a indy shop and about a hlaf day to do it yourself...

Well, let's just say you could add this to the "most offensive charges" thread.

Replace the drive shaft u joints and centering ball for less than $100 and the engine mounts for about the same, it depends on where you shop.
The drive shaft u joints are a known issue, see the How To section.

DO NOT DRIVE THIS TRUCK!!!!
No they are not related issues.
The front driveshaft on the DII is non greasable and it MUST be rebuilt with greaseable parts or replaced with another driveshaft.
Do a search on here, there are pictures of what happens when the front driveshaft grenades. (it takes out your transmission)

Have the truck towed to a different shop.

The dealer is taking you for a HUGE ride.
