Default Front engine coolant leak...

Hey gang,

Well, I've got a new issue. Leaking coolant from what appears to be behind the water pump. Not the water pump itself, but what really looks like the timing cover...

It's quite hard to see exactly where it's coming from, but it's definitely a steady trickle when she gets to temperature.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Pressure test the coolant system and get under the truck with a flash light to find the leak location.

A pressure test kit can be bought at Harbor freight for around $70 that will fit just about anything and you can do the tool loan at most stores like Advanced, O reillys etc. You pay for the tool and then when you bring it back thy refund you the money so it is of no cost to you.
I just did my front cover, wasn't really that bad/hard. Did timing chain, gears, oil pump and water pump since I had it all apart.

Careful.
Timing cover leaking can get coolant into the oil.
That ruins lower end bearings too.

OK, so I cleaned a bit underneath the truck and it looks to me like the leak is possibly in two areas: 1) water pump gasket and 2) more prominently, behind the water pump. I have two pictures attached taken from the underneath driver's side vantage point.

Is the more prominent leak at the timing cover gasket from the way it looks?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Well, maybe the leak from the WP is being blown by fan back to the other spot. Pressure tester would help.

Thanks. I can actually see the coolant weaping from the area I marked "leak" after the engine is to temperature and then shut off.

The timing cover gasket is then suspect. While you are in there you have some other items that can be attended to.

1. O ring for oil pickup and loctite on bolts that hold it (not the oil pan itself). Clean oil pickup.

2. Oil pump gears.

3. Timing chain inspect / replace.

4. Water pump inspect / replace

Takes some wrench time, but has good rewards. Replace depends on wallet, time available, vs future wallet and future time available. If you were a Washington politician this sort of decision could occupy several months or years.
