Yes, it could just be ready to fail, mileage does not matter, mine failed at 37,000 miles.
Yes, buy the standard shaft from Bill Davis at Great Basins Rivers it is by far the best on the market for around $350,and unlike the $295 ones that are usually made with parts from China, his will last.
