Default Front Prop Shaft Question

I used the search, but couldnt seem to find anything to answer my question...so here it is...i was looking at the service manual and my u-joint has the grease nipple, but how do I actually grease it?

Also, I thought the problem with these prop shafts was that they were not fitted with grease nipples, and that is why they fail...am i wrong?

If you have the front driveshaft with all the fittings:

But it sounds like you still have the OEM one, so This should answer your second question:

You'll need a grease gun

If you have this type of zerk fitting, use the tip that comes with the gun.

If the propshaft has been rebuilt you may have this type of zerk (flush head):

If you do, you'll need a tip for the grease gun that looks like this:

If you have both types, you can get another grease gun to keep with the tip for the flush style (that's is what I do) or change the tip.

You want to grease the u-joints at least every 5,000 miles. I do it every 3,000 when I change my oil.
You want to pump in enough grease that you get new grease coming out of all 4 seals on each u-joint. You will likely get a lot of grease out of one or more before it comes out of all 4. Don't worry about that, it's not harmful. Just wipe off the excess when you're done so it doesn't get flung off on to the exhaust.
Sometimes the journals get jammed to one side and no grease will come out from one or more of the seals. If that happens, tap on the yoke with a hammer opposite of the problematic journal. This will cause the u-joint to shift in the yoke towards your hammer, and may allow the grease to flow.
If you still can't get grease out of all 4 seals, remove the propshaft and try it on the bench. If you still can't, it means the grease is so hardened inside that you need to replace the u-joint.

There's also a fitting on the shaft, near the splined end. It may be a plug that you have to remove, and put in a fitting so you can grease it.
