I just did this and my oil looked the same. I filled the diffs and transfer case with Redline Shockproof gear oil and it made a big difference in feel and noise. The silver milkshake has me a bit worried, but there were no chunks so we will see.

Well changed out the oil in the transfer case today and it went very smooth. Oil wasn't nearly as bad looking as it thought it would be. From the looks of the fill plug I think this oil had been changed before. The plug was slightly striped as it a breaker bar had been used on it before but not fully inserted. Thanks again for all the tips.

 

I have a 2001 Disco 2 SE. I am preparing it for a bit of a road trip. I just passed 70k miles. Doing all the maintenance stuff.

What gear oil is recommended as a daily, highway driver in the Northeast? I see AtlanticBritish has the Land Rover 75/90 oil. I see others here recommend 75 or 85/140, then I read somewhere on here that some experienced a roaring sound with the wight that high, and switched down to 85/90.

Which one is best for highway driving in all season?

 

I use Royal Purple 85/140 in both diffs and transfer case.
Worked great in the Atlanta summer heat and no problems in the cold now in England.

 

I change my diff fluid every year.

 

Ok - Given that the original Landrover rec is their 75W90 SAE fluid, would 75W-140 synthetic be the better choice for the new england weather / highway driving? (say, possibly better choice from the 85w-140).
