Default fuel delivery problem

my disco suddenly cut out on me the weekend while driving off road. Half a tank full.

Would turn over but not start. Went through fuel purge procedure but still no joy. RAC man suggested a fuel delivery problem although pump in tank running ok.
Managed to get started the next day after purge procedure repeated and easy start in air in take.

I have a little diesel around injector area which has been present for some months. My mechanic has dismissed this and suggested it wise not to disturb the injectors. he also dismissed checking fuel filter. At this stage he can not find a fault

I need to understand what has caused the problem so it does not happen again. Is my mechanic right or just does not want to do anything.

any advise based on own experience would be welcome

Are there any trouble codes? Even if you don't have a check engine light, there may be some pending codes stored.

Angry update on problem

since I have posted this thread I have changed a few things

new fuel filter, regulator air bleed valve and fuel pump

The car starts ok but then after a few seconds it has a loss of power. It takes about 10 seconds to recover. As it recovers the water sensor light comes on the dash board.

I have checked everywhere for fuel leaks. This does not happen only when it is cold. I can drive for an hour no problem. But as soon as I switch off it the problem will re occur.

I would appreciate any advise on this

This forum is mostly Americans, and we sadly don't have diesels.

OffroadFrance is the only guy with a diesel I can think of off the top of head.

I don't know if these trucks have it or not, but most NA built trucks have it. Check your water separator and drain it.
