Solved: Fuel Door Stuck - Missing Grommet Preventing Door from Unlocking
Update: I resolved this with a generic rubber grommet replacement - see instructions a few posts down.

Hi,
The fuel door on my DII is having some trouble. There was a sort of plastic retaining part on the body of the vehicle (not the part on the fuel door itself), which I’ve been searching for. I thought the BPX700010 part was the right part, but that’s the part on the fuel door itself, which is in working order on my vehicle.
Does anyone know where to find the other part? I’ve linked images of the fuel door on my DII that should help explain what I’m looking for. NOTE: currently, there is a metal pole sticking out of the hole in the vehicle’s body where the missing part was. I’m guessing this part is electronically controlled by the button next to the steering wheel, and when the button is pushed, the pole is pulled into the vehicle, unlocking the fuel door. Currently, the fuel door will grab onto this pole and stay shut, but without the part on this metal pole, it retracts into the vehicle and needs to be fished out each time.
The little metal thingy is the Fuel Door Actuator, or plunger.
To REPLACE it, you will need to remove the interior panels behind the fuel door. You will need to start at the rear door, and remove the UPPER and LOWER panels. There are 2 bolts which hole the 4-5" rod and its motor/actuator in place. Remove those and disconnect the connectors. You will find the part in between the metal panels.
INSTALL your new/used part.
NOTE: IF the tiny little black thingy on the fuel door is missing, then your fuel door will NOT STAY CLOSED.
So I am one day into 2004 Discovery ownership and the first trip to the gas station was an event because we couldn’t get the fuel door open. Managed to fget it open and now we have a comb key to the fuel and the clip seems good but the actuator doesn’t do anything when the button on the dash is pressed. As asked before anyone know of a video on troubleshooting the connections?
Check that the issue isn’t the grommet. It could be a fuse or the actuator itself, but in my case, the grommet had fallen apart prevent the door from releasing properly.
I’m pasting what I did from the other thread I’d originally shared this in, but it makes more sense to have it here:
This is how I dealt with the grommet issue - bought this part at Home Depot for $2 (2 Pack) and shoved it in there, which took some work and the help of a very small flathead screwdriver. The hole in the body where the actuator solenoid pin sticks out is about 3/8. This grommet holds the pin well and it works very well. The clip on the fuel door has no problem grabbing it easily each them and letting it loose. The pin doesnt get lost behind the sheet metal body anymore. There are grommets you can buy online (maybe one thats about 3/8-1/2) and you can punch a hole through it if its a blank grommet. There are grommet sets on eBay for about $8.
I hope I’m responding correctly. My grommet is good. Pin moves if pushed by hand so not totally stuck. It just doesn’t retract at all when the fuel button is pushed.

is the Rover turned off? the latch will not actuate if the Rover is running or the key is in the ON position.
