Default Fuel pump changed now it hesitates to fire.

I just changed out the fuel pump and filter. The pump was dead. The truck fired right up after I changed out the pump, but now it is hard to start. If I just turn the key with out hesitating, it will not fire. If I turn the key and wait for the pump to come on for a about 5 seconds, It will usually fire, but I may have to give it a little gas. Any Ideas?

Cheers, Whitepine

If it is a DI, you might want to change your fuel filter. If it is a DII, no fuel filter. Sounds like you aren't getting sufficient pressure from the new fuel pump. YOu can check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail using a fuel pressure gauge. You should be showing 35 lbs. give or take as I recall. Phil

The pump you installed, was it a brand new one from Rover or an after market, also did you replace the entire pump assembly or just the pump?

I replaced just the pump with the airtec pump and a new strainer. I am going to check the fuel pressure at the rail this weekend and check for any leaks.

CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER!!!!
If the filter is clogged it will overwork the pump and burn it up as well as cause hard starts.

I changed the pump and strainer along with putting in a new fuel filter. Are you saying I should now replace the "new fuel filter" too.

Cheers, Whitepine

Check your fuel pressure after it has sat for a few hours. Sounds like your check valve in the sending unit is not holding pressure when off.

A good fuel pressure ga is a wonderful thing to have, however, when I check(ed) mine, I used a fairly cheap $2 tire pressure ga. (that was over a year ago & ga still works fine)

Protect yourself with an old rag.

Kenk is dead on, it should hold pressure for at least 1/2hr after shutdown.

luck,greg
