Default Function of shims backing brake pads ?

What do those thin shims do, and what are the dangers if found not installed to the brake pads ?

The shims provide a bit of cushion between the pad and the caliper and help eliminate brake noise. It they're gone, your brakes may squeal a bit more than they should.

Also help reduce heat transfer. If missing I would not worry about it at all, unless they got loud.

You can apply some caliper silencing goo (don't know it's actual brand name) between the caliper and the brake pad "if" they squeal.
