Default G4 Edition?

Is the 2004 G4 Edition really worth anything extra, or should they be valued just the same as any other similarly optioned machine?

Is the A-frame up front purely cosmetic, or does it have any use for mounting a winch at all? How about the rear ladder, functional or cosmetic? What brand are the driving lights?

Anything special about the truck other than the obvious:

Colour
Seat Fabric
A-Frame
Ladder
Decals
Tail Light Guards

Anything unseen, skidplates, locking diffs, etc?

I say that the most special thing about it, is the fact that they imported very few of them, rendering them a collectible item.

The a frame is cosmetics, the rear ladder is fonctional. The fog lights are Land Rover, but I think that IPF is the company that makes them.

Mostly they just just look cool. Are you looking at one that was actually used in G4 or one that just looks like it was a g4? and like Darover said they are a pretty rare so they would be considered a collectors item. Just cursious, how much are they going for?

I just put a deposit on one. Didn't want to reveal too much because, I think it's a steal. 87,000km (~55k miles) for $15,000. The exterior of it is in pretty good condition for it's age I think. A few stone chips on front, not really any rust. A couple scuffs on the bumper corners. Has the original stickers. It had been in an accident, but seemingly light. The report said they repainted but did not replace the left front fender and doors. No frame straightening or anything like that. Just a repaint. I'm guessing somebody wiped it in a parking lot. The interior needs a detail, and there is some evidence of an aftermarket stereo install. So the interior isn't virgin. That was the worst part. Nothing too bad, but it's not mint. Mechanically it seems in top shape.

The foglights were unbranded, but... LR doesn't actually make anything. The mount system looked like Hella, but the reflectors did not. I hope they work well in any case, because they look great with the grille, and even the housing is detailed. Maybe I'll put my FF1000's on the roof.

How much extra would these be expected to draw?

It was by far the cheapest 04 Disco on the market. I went in thinking "too good to be true, and a G4 to boot!" But it actually was much better than I feared it could be, and I'd have bought it even if it wasn't a G4. The G4 is just bonus.

The dealer knows it's a special edition, but I don't think they know what it means, or what it may be worth? There were only 25 in Canada. It's a large lot in Toronto, they operate just by moving a lot of tin. They pick them up at auction, mark them up $1000 and move them.

This is just the factory replica, not a real race truck. It doesn't have the expedition rack unfortunately.

If it has a trailer hitch, does it automatically come with a 4 pin wiring harness? I plan to tow with it.

The Rover harnesses are not the regular 4 pin horizontal design. Its much better than that. Its a round plug-in that is actually removeable. You'll see...much better than what you'd expect.

Congrats on the purchase. It's a good thing that you got such a great deal, cause it is.....but keep a few grands on the side for the normal wear items.

There's a Rover specialist in Brampton. He comes very highly recommended. There's also Land Rover Salvage in Madoc.

Good luck.

How much will the adaptor be for the wiring harness? I heard $100-200, or is that only if you don't have the 6 pin at all?

Madoc eh? That's good to know. Thanks!

Can somebody tell me how the rear suspension is supposed to work? It has the SLS in the rear, and the button on the jack to lift it for off-road. I pushed the button, and a light blinked on the dash, but then nothing happened. I'd hold it on longer, and the light would blink more, I think I heard a chime, but still, it wouldn't jack up. I would have read the manual, but the manual is missing.

Listen my friend. Being from the same region as you, and knowing that a good 2004 disco with that kind of mileage goes for the low to the mid $20000. So there's no way in hell that you can get a collector's item that is the G4 edition for almost $10 000under what it should be priced at, without expecting to have to address a very long list of things to be done. I checked it on the autotrader and the price is definitely low. But then again, even if you spend 4 to 5 grands fixing it, you'll still be way lower than what you should have paid for it.

For the SLS, I personnally ditched it for a spring conversion and an old Man Emu suspension. The reason why I did this, was simply to eliminate any possibility for the rear suspension to go wrong at the worst of times, like 2-3 hours from home in a ski cabin up north. Actually, even close to home I wasn't interested to have to deal with a problematic suspension. But that's just me. Others will differ I'm sure.

Again, you can't go and pay almost half of what a vehicle would be, especially from a used car lot, and expect it to be in perfect shape. Beware!!!!

So, what are you saying? I shouldn't buy it? "Too good to be true?"

Mechanically, it seems fine to me. I'm a fairly experienced home mechanic. I actually was an automotive engineer for 6 years. Worked at Ford Powertrain for 4, Dana for 2, Litens for1 (they did the FEAD on the Disco).

I think the price was a combination of things. They had no idea what they were getting. They are a dealer that prices cars very aggressively and moves a lot of stuff. They should have had a revolving door for all the business that was going on. Never seen a place so busy. While I was there, a transport truck showed up from the US, and they already had half the cars on it sold. It's not a case where this was a lemon sitting on a lot for a while and the price was slashed. It's a lease return, they bought it at the Adesa auction on 11/28. They take photos right at the auction and get the ads in the Trader before they even have the cars. They only had the car on the lot since Saturday, and somebody almost bought it out from under me.

Anyway, the car seemed mechanically very sound. Engine was great, fluids look pretty good. Transmission worked well. I checked the low range and CDL. Brakes were good, tires good. Suspension good. Stops straight. Alignment good. Everything I could check without taking it apart was fine.

No,No, I mean by all means jump on it !!!! Just expect ot have stuff to do to it.

But, dive under and check the oil pan bellhousing area for oil leaks. Open the hood and make sure that the coolant level is at its intended level when cold.check the dipstick for the oil level and color. Wghile checking the dipstick, see if you have traces of coolant in the oil. remove the coolant bottle's cap and see if you have traces of oil in the coolant.Trying to rule out head gasket problem.Check the t-case for leaks also. Go for a long ride. But if it was me, I'd spend a few undred dollars and have it checked by a Rover expert. Might as well loose a few hundred dollars, than not have the inspection done, and end up with a money pit. And believe me, money pits they can be.

Remove the top rad cover and check inside the lower corners of the rad to see if its pink. If it is, expect to have to change the rad. Also make sure that no warning lights are on. Better yet, if you have an OBD2 reader, give it a reading. I'd lend you mine, but I'm in Ottawa. I think they're on saleat Canadian tire. Go get it, If you really intend to work on your own truck, you'll need it anyways.

Good luck and keep me posted. I'd like to know how this will turn out.
