gearbox problems
Hello again.
I have a problem since i changed my gearbox oil and filter on my disco 2 4.0 v8.
I also changed the headgasket just for info.
I serviced the gearbox iaw the manual with dextron 2 oil.
Now in idle the car runs top, but after i put it in gear drive the RPM spools down to 300 and comes up again.
This is only in drive standing still. not in reverse.
It happens every like 15 seconds.
I drove already 50km with the car and checked the gearbox oil level again.
Does anybody have an idee what the problem can be?
Can it be that its the wrong oil? its a 4.0 v8 from 1999

IMHO the quantity that came out vs the quantity replaced is one question. The shop manual page is attached for drain and fill, it says keep adding until you get a 2mm bead of fluid running out. You have to move the shifter around (ebrake on) to circulate fluid in all the places. Sounds like you are low on fluid.

You need to run the engine and get under there with it running and add fluid.
Creepy, I know.
When it is low, you can hear it cavitation too - if you listen carefully when you first start it up in the morning.
Also wondering if your position indicator for telling the ECU what gear you are in may be just a little skewed.
If it is in drive - but the switch is adjusted a bit off and it goes from Neutral to drive and neutral again - the ECU will add RPM for the drive position and back it off for N.
So, if you are in D and the switch thinks you are in N for a moment, the ECU would probably crank down the RPM.
I am guessing here.
