Default General Tranny fault code???

My LR service manager called (its a well respected independant shop in the area) and told me the LR threw a "general transmission fault"- they have no description and were contacting a company, All Data, to get a better description. He said the fluid level was good, and the condition of the fluid was good. I also asked specifically if it was an ECU fault and he said no. The Service Manager did not know the fault code of the top of his head.

So to reiterate. Two weekends ago when it was very hot 90+ f, the car "hiccuped" twice on the highway and a few minutes later went into limp mode. I exited the freeway, turned it off and let it sit. Started back-up and on my way. When I got back on the highway, the engine temp increasedbriefly but substantially (but did not get into the red zone), then settled back into normal range.

The next day I had a "crank, no start", again very warm day. After great advise here I determined my A/C condensor fan was frozen-up, which I replaced. The battery cables had a lot of corrosion on them so while under the hood I clean both the cables and the terminals.

One last item- I went into limp mode one morning last winter taking my son to school- I did not realize it was limp mode at the time, I just shut it down and started it again and it ran fine.

Your mechanic is no very familiar with your 2 problems, which may both be related.
How many miles on your truck, how old is your battery?
Have him do a load test on the battery/alternator, you probably will find you have a low voltage issue, bad battery and or dirty cable. You need to have between 13.6 and 14.4 volts to keep the tranny's ECU happy. If so install a good battery and your problems will be over.
By the way what exactly was the 4 digit fault code number, if you don't know, get it and post it for us.

I just got off the phone with the service manager. He did not give me specific codes but said one was a voltage fault (I told him I had clean the battery terminals and connections before bringing it to him). He said that was another fault that had to do with a "can" system??? Had something to do with a wiring bus. At any rate, he said if it continued to throw a fault I needed to take it to LR to have it scanned- it apparently is in a place they cannot get to in the system???

I am going to see if he can put the codes on the invoice and I'll let you know.

BTW- its a 02 DII with about 82000 miles. No clue on the age of the battery. I bought the truck back in February of this year.

The "average" life of a car battery is 4-5 years, your trk is a '02, if the original battery lasted 4 years you are half way into the life of the new one.
Battery life all depends on the loads put on it, temps is lives in and the quality of the battery.
Miles has nothing to do with it.
If you live in a warm climate car batteries tend to last longer, I have seen them as old as10before they failed to start the car.

Mike, do you know what brand of battery LR used as OEM?

Have this idiot of a mechanic do the battery/alternator test I suggested.
