Question Gentlemen : can we define overheating ?

What is your opinion to draw a line on a consensus coolant temperature ?

Many years ago, I read related to coolant temperature, that the correct working temperature of an ICE was taken as "so many degrees above ambient air temperature" Cannot remember the figure now; but could be an alternate way to express it.

Could it be 111C for our vehicles ?
Could it be 70C above ambient ?

Or, list your suggestions ?

For me 220 degrees, but anything over 205 is abnormal.

I agree, 205 is hot enough for my engine. I like to hover between 190-195.

Down the list using and UlTRA GAUGE for the OBDII conntecion (always in the dogs.
2001 P38 Ambient over 100 deg F Engine NORMAL 194 up to 205 at red light
1998 D1 Ambient over 100 deg f Engine Normal 194 up to 210 at red light.
2003 D2 Ambient at 94 deg f Engine Normal 201 (note needs bearing so higher temp seen)

Normal on P38 and D1 means A/C on and driving at up to 70 mph.
BOTH P-38 and D1 have ALL NEW cooling systems.
Before rebuilds:
P-38 251 to 265 with normal at 215.
D1 221 to 230 with normal at 210
I recommend to get an Ultra Gauge ($69.00) it saved the D1 engine and would have saved the P-38 if I had it.
No I do not work for them we have (4) in different cars.

Personally, 210 is my limit. That's when I start panicking....

My UG alarm is set to 205. I expect this to happen past that.

Im suspicious of anything above 205 although that is not technically overheating. I think technical overheating is 230 F but I think consistently driving at 220 will cause gradual damage.

Luckily I don't have to ever see those temps again with the inline thermostat. I run 183-188.6 all day every day. If you haven't done this mod you should do it yesterday.

230 is when the gauge moves.

I'm irritated at 212.

I panic at 220.

If I gets over 230 I just grab my phone and order a head gasket kit and call a tow truck.

I average 194-197 driving on highway with AC on in Phoenix. Ambient is typically over 105, and can go to 119 on a bad day.

Hottest I've seen at stoplight is 208. I don't like to see anything over 205, but have only the low temp rover T-stat, and its the knockoff, not the OEM.

I also have the GP rover block with the ARP studs in it though, so I think it'll handle a little more than stock.

Last 4.0 engine I had with inline therm mod stayed around 186F all day every day.

Personally, if I see 205 I get attentive, anything over 210 and I'm shutting it down.
