yes, I have read the manual. 15 ft lbs and then 1 90 degree turn and then a second 90 degree turn. Rave manual says to lightly oil threads. My question was what is the proper oil to use on the threads? I also wanted to verifiy that 15 ft lbs is correct, since the rave manual is up to MY02. Thanks

Just broke down and checked...yep:

"5. Carefully fit cylinder heads and locate on dowels.
6. Lightly lubricate new cylinder head bolts with clean engine oil."

End of debate. That was boring.

The workshop manual in the Rave is the latest and covers all the model years. If there are differences they note it. The 4.6 and 4.0 are pretty much the same engine so the head bolt torquing sequence is the same. As far as the proper lube I just used 10w30 oil that I had around, just a few drops.

We disco owners are lucky that we have the rave cd available free of charge.

Default head bolt torque

The proper way to torque the head is initial 15ft-lbs, then turn bolts 90degrees, twice. Good method is to torque to 15 ft-lbs (all the bolts) then mark each bolt head (on top) with a vertical line using a silver sharpee marker, Now go in the correct order and tighten each bolt 90 degrees....now all the sharpee lines are horizontal (double check). then repeat...another 90 degrees on each bolt......when the marker lines are all vertical you know you did 'em all.

I did mine "wet" about 1 yr ago after taking the advice of the Toyota mechanic here. I actually used STP. Time will tell, but its worked perfect to date.

I also suggest the "right stuff" over the RTV because RS stick so much better and cures faster....

Like I mentioned in the thread on my head gasket job, I went a completely different route and used teflon tape instead of oil on the head bolts. I also turned the three longer bolts (1,3,5) down another 45 degrees. It may last or I may be doing this again real soon. Time will tell.......
