This is strange, but here is how it went down. Got home in time to mess with it. Verified wires, check. Started it up and pulled it in the shop. Decided to plug in my new Ultragauge to play with it. Set up temp first cause I had just completed thermostat mod a few days ago and wanted to bleed it a bit more and watch the temps. Let it run over 38 minutes, but noticed that when I revved the motor to watch the temp drop, the flashing SES light would go solid. Then, about 15 minutes in, up to temp, the SES light went out. I switched the ultragauge to code mode, and no codes and no codes pending!
I later got a pending P0154 indicating maybe I should go ahead and install the new o2 sensors I have setting here tomorrow. Never got hotter than 178, and I had good heat, although the force of air with the fan on high was disappointing. Went from numerous misfires and 1884 to no codes just by letting it warm up. Explain that!

I can guarantee you both it is not oxygen sensor related. Those codes will not show up due to oxygen sensors, bad oxygen sensors throw oxygen sensor codes.

Yesterday I installed both o2 sensors. What a pain to get to. And obviously no prior anti-seize was used. I have reason to believe they were the originals as the ends on the sensors were orange, the same as the harness ends. My new ones were gray. Passenger side required heating to get it loose and then the threads looked horrible when I got it out, however the threads in the bung must have survived as the new one tightened down as it should. My big hands BARELY squeezed in to unplug and plug back in-it took some scrapes and contorting, but I'm no quitter.
Fired it up and let it get up to temp. No codes. None pending. Drove it to work this morning and got it inspected on the way. Temps running about 178 and no leaks. Ultra gauge showed "err" in my temp window when I first started it. Whats up with that? She gets licensed today.
If anyone needs original Disco 2 wiper arms, I have my takeoffs available. I also have the cross bar that goes from frame to frame under the front driveshaft, the bleeder T for the upper radiator hose, and uh-hum, a used factory thermostat....
My TW front driveshaft should arrive today, and while the one in there has greasable u-joints, it does not have the greasable slip joint, so I guess I'll install the new one. No vibrations on the road, but I'm concerned that I could over extend it with the 2.5" lift. I'll have that excellent looking driveshaft available soon too, and I'll keep the box from the new one to ship it out in. I'll post in the classifieds as well when I have time.

I think I'm about done. Starting to look for an 04 transfer case with CDL and the shifter, so I guess I'm never actually done. I think its gonna be a good one!

I have the tstat housing and bleed valve swapped on my inline mod — I wonder how much of a difference it would make to swap it like yours

Not true, actually. I had it happen on my truck a couple of years ago, and I remember reading about least one other case on this forum.

The misfires were all on one side, and the only thing shared by all the cylinders on one side is the O2 sensor. I replaced the O2 sensor and cleared the codes and they didn't come back. Oddly there were no typical O2 sensor codes. Stuff happens.

I had read that it is "best" to have the thermostat as close to the engine as possible.

I was concerned that I may hit the hood with the thermostat sitting where it is, and you can see that I marked the shroud for cutting as needed, but so far no indentation marks in the underhood insulation. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good!

I found that other case as well and as in this case people were telling him that it’s not the O2 sensors because there’s no codes. He changed them and sure enough it ran smooth and the codes went away. I’m having the same problem with misfires only on one side after new coils, new wires and new plugs. My O2‘s look like they’ve been on for a very long time. I think it’s going to be my next step.
