Go with 02, 03 or 04 ? you tell me.
2004 model is the best Disco II available. The 4.6L V8 along with a beefed up T-case and transmission and in car CDL shifter are some of the high points. The best cars to buy, regardless of model, are usually the last year of that model range. That is when most of the refinements and improvements are made. Of course the LR3 is an amazing vehicle, but it comes with a price premium over an '04 Disco II.

Alright guys I picked up the 04 yetserday. 52 k I changed the oil and air filter right away. What else do I need to do right away. I am used to Toyota trucks and the bare minimum keeps them ticking. I can tell right off the bat this will need to be babied.
Have the front driveshaft rebuild. The double cardon joint where the front driveshaft connects to the transfercase has non greasable u-joints, when they fail they take out your transmission.
These trks are very reliable and will take lots of abuse but they do require attention. Just like a supermodel, you can work them all day and as long as you dont call them fat they are happy.
Ballpark, $250 parts and labor. Local mechanic or driveline shop. Dealer will want to replace it with another...$700. And then you still have the same problem.
It is a stupid design, but thats the way it is. When that double cardon joint fails it "slaps" the side of the transmission and punch's a hole in the side and then you need a new one...$7,000.
When you have it rebuilt make sure thet they rebuild it with greasable u-joints, it will take 3. Plus a centering ball kit. As long as it is greased at every oil change it should last forever.
