Thought I'd chime in on the STTs. I just put a set of nearly new 245/75/16s on my 1997 Disco. They replaced a crappy set of Falken Ziex something-or-others with a highway tread that came on my rig. The STTs are definitely more aggressive appearance-wise, and a little rougher/louder than the HTs but not nearly as much as I was expecting. They've been out in the snow and ice a bit but not yet on the trail. I'm quite happy with them, but then again I picked them up for $350 already mounted on 1999 Disco wheels. Not sure I would have paid the $200+/- that they seem to go for, although that may change once I see how they wear. FWIW, I'm running a 2" lift and that size seems to fit the wheel well nicely. No trimming, although it may yet be necessary once I see how more articulation goes.

 

I really want some 7.50R16's, so I'm thinking of contacting Cooper to see what it would take for them to make the STT's in 750R16.

Treadwright makes a great tire, they last well with lots of traction and at about $100 a piece, they are worth every penny.
Here in Colorado, lots of people are switching over to them with great results.

 

Mike, How do those Crawler's fair in rain and in the snow? I've heard (in general) that MT tires aren't always the greatest, but I've found my AT's to be lacking offroad...

 

I ran them for 8 years, 2 years into them I found that is you sipe them, they are great on snow and ice and living in Colorado, that was the extra help the tires needed. By the way, they work really well on slick rock or smooth surfaces like at Moab.

 

Any traction on this? I just went off-road for the first time this weekend in my D90, which has 7.50R16 XZLs, and they are AMAZING.... but I'm just wondering what my options will be when I wear them out.

I know rovers north has them, but they appear to be about $300 each, and I've seen others for like $1500 for 5 with steel wheels (obvious new takeoffs from the UK)... but those prices aren't making me too happy.

The only other things I see in 7.50R16 are RV highway tread tires, or bias ply farm truck tires (which might be ok in warm weather).

 

How do thinner tires affect highway driving? I've been told that it causes a floaty feeling. Is this true? Im running 265/75/16 open country WLT1 winters. Looking at going thinner as well for summer. Ether open country MT or duratracs.

 

Stay with your 265's, much better ride and handling then a much narrower tire

I've always found thinner to be quite better, especially to get rid of that floating feeling.
