Default Good trip MPG

Just got back from a small camping trip, and other than water leaking inside (see my other recent post for details) it went really well and I managed to get 18.3 MPG! That’s way better than I expected, especially for a 20 year old D2 loaded with stuff, and I’m going to take that as a consolation prize for the water ingress. I’m also going to take that as evidence that the inside of my engine (compression rings and such) are in OK shape.

I’m open to my calculation being wrong (although I did check it because I thought it was unusually good), a few caveats however, which I probably should have mentioned in retrospect.
1) It was all highway
2) On more than one occasion I have been accused of “driving like a grandma” by my wife (whose a bit of a lead foot if I say so myself
3) These vehicles were EPA rated at 15 MPG, and it’s usually possible to beat those numbers by a little.

At any any rate this is the first time I’ve done an economy evaluation and I’m sure it will fluctuate, maybe I just got lucky with conditions.

Ok, But what was your method of determining your MPG?

I do lots of long road trips and keep things in top tune and regularly get 16.5. Measured by actual miles between points, not reading the odometer, as that can be and usually is incorrect by up to 5%. OBDII devices are also not exact as there is no actual fuel consumption or mpg sensor.

When I get some time I’ll look up and recompute with actual trip mileages instead of the odometer readings. I bet that’s where the discrepancy lies. Thanks for your insight, quite frankly if I can get 15 I’ll be happy.

16mpg was my best, usually it is about 15mpg on my trips, but fully loaded, AC on, mountains, freeway speed. In town I am happy if I get 11mpg.
