Question Grease on the rear hub?

I took off the rear drivers side wheel to do some brake work. I removed the caliper and noticed there was a good bit of what appeared to be caked on grease all around the hub area.

Is this grease from the hub and do I need to re-pack it?

They are not serviceable, but if you remove the sensor you can re pack it with grease. I did that and it worked but my hub is just worn out enough towards where the sensor doesn't always pick it up.

I don't think you'll find it's grease Dusty, it's more than likely axle/diff oil and your rear seal O ring is letting by oil. How to replace the rear axle seal - Land Rover Forums : Land Rover and Range Rover Forum

If you look in RAVE section/page 51-3 you will see the section through the rear hub which shows the offending O ring.

Mine has exactly the same problem and needs fixing. Awful job means draining the diff, stripping off the brake caliper, carrier, hub etc and fitting a new O ring.

Axle seals are right next to the hubs. When they leak oil, they'll pick up some dust and dirt and will look like grease. I just did this job. its a pita.

The hubs (if your going to stuff grease into them) looks like they are sporting white lithium grease. I could be wrong though. When I looked at my hubs last they had a light blue-ish tint to them.

^ the manufacturers have not been consistent with the lube. I have one with a very light (lith. looking)....1 with regular grease and 2 that appear to have gear oil....
still say its the axle seal (spring broke or just worn out) cheap and easy!

easy job. get a 1 1/4" socket (it fits better on the stake) and, by the way, that is exactly what I am saying, oil (diff oil) looks like grease with the brake and road grime.
