I see temps from 175 to 221 in this thread. What's normal? Mine is currently running 206 - 215

I have the warm climate soft spring termostat which I plan to install soon.

Before I switched to the 180 thermostat I was seeing temps averaging at 209 in the Texas Summer. Now I average around 194 in the heat of the summer. Spring and Winter it hangs around 186. Also running 50/50 Prestone High Mileage Antifreeze and a bottle of Water Wetter.

I ordered 2 soft spring from PButah and got Motor rad also. Not happy - could have saved a few bucks by using Amazon If I knew I was going to get Motor Rad Should I send them back?

There have been a lot of posts about the 180 stats, and with the number of "problems" reported about the motorad, perhaps it would be more prudent to spend a few dollars more and get a Land Rover one, from some place like Rovers North or {gasp!} the dealer.

And if you just don't like that configuration, there is always the in-line thermostat modification which seem to keep those trucks in the 183 - 187 range.

Thanks for the plug Savannah, we've actually had quite a few purchases of the PEL500110
from this board.

I went back and checked my receipts and I did not purchase mine from BPUtah but from Rovers North. I just had a chat session with Atlantic British about the motorad. Here was the outcome.

me: I ordered the PEL500110 and in the box was a white Motorad thermostat. I am under the impression a PEL50010 is a grey soft spring thermostat. Why did I not receive that?
Eric:
They come in white now from our supplier

me: and they are motorad? So I'm not actually getting a PEL500110? but a copy?
Eric: The ones that we sell are for Britpart in the UK
me: Is this a 180 degree soft spring thermostat?
Eric: Yes it is
me: Ok, I wish I would have known it was motorad brand. I have had 2 defective motorads from other suppliers in the past year. Not impressed with their product at all.
Eric: Are you sure it is the thermostate and not another cooling issue?
me: Yes. 1st one the o-ring inside was not seated and you could see it inside the thermostat and it was leaking. The 2nd one would never open.
Eric: ah ok
me: anyway I'm about to order a head gasket kit and would like to know what brand is the gaskets in your kit for the 4.0L
Eric: Elring
me: for the entire kit or just the head gaskets?
Eric: Just the head gaskets the rest are Eurospare

No plug intended. But the early adopters of the stat were spending like $125 to get one from UK. Some firms make good copies, some cut corners, some have a quality control program that is not up to the task. Murphy's Law "loves" thermostats.

On the other hand, a D1 (or a D2 with in-line stat mod) uses a thermostat size that has been around since the 1940's in some cases. Fits like 3000 different vehicles. In the old days, grandpa would have a winter and a summer thermostat, and antifreeze was high dollar and only run in the winter if you could afford it. With such high production volume those stats are less likely to cause problems and can be pretty cheap if you buy at Rock Auto, etc.

Haha I don't know of any discount codes, but I believe we'll be running FREE shipping this weekend though so keep your eyes out.

As for the thermo you received, it is Genuine, it is not an aftermarket piece. If it is not grey, it is not a Genuine PEL500110, it's an aftermarket part.
