Exclamation Was Groaning, now it's leaking. Time to deal with the steering.

So I've had the apocryphal groaning in the steering for a long time and now it's started leaking quite a bit of fluid. Time to deal with the problem. Sigh.

The whole steering box, arm and area is wet, so I assume I need a new one.

Thinking of ordering this:
https://www.lrdirect.com/QAF000040E-...anded-oem.html

Does that seem right? Is there anything else I'm likely to need?

Odds are I'll be getting a mechanic to deal with it but want to have all the parts so I don't have them ordering from Landrover (because I have not yet won the lotto).

Any thoughts? Hints? Suggestions?

As always, thanks!

I think my pump is still dry (and therefore okay?), but will know better when I get under her tomorrow. Surprised by how all over the place the oil is.
Of course, that's me assuming I'm just seeing one kind of oil. What are the odds of that in a LR?

Coincidentally, I bought a cheap rebuilt pump off ebay exactly 2 years ago today. No issues so far.

discovery rover steering pump | eBay

Mine failed because the large hose had a leak that got much worse during a major road trip. My understanding is once they start groaning, the damage has been done.

First, why have you let it go on for so long and what's with your assuming?????
When was the fluid last changed, have you even considered checking the system for leaks. Turn some mechanic loose on this and you are going to pay dearly and may still have the same problem.

How long does it take to swap out the pump? Just wondering. Mordo's eBay pump sounds like the route I would go.

But if just groaning, does that mean it's getting ready to go? Ford ps pumps are notorious for that and they still keep going. If it's leaking then maybe just re-seal the thing.

It isn't a Ford!!
Need to power clean the front of the engine, top and bottom so you can then find the leak before throwing parts at it.

As I recall, it takes a few hours. The big PITA is bleeding the pump. It's been 2 years, but I seem to remember PS fluid going everywhere.

I agree with Mike - the failure could just be a worn out pump, but it could also be a hole in a line/hose, which needs to be fixed along with the new pump. The hole in my hose was big enough I was able to lay underneath the truck with a flashlight and spot it, so I knew what to fix.

I also did try a DIY rebuild of my pump, but the damage had been done.

You are right Mike.
Let it go that long because I'm a bad person, and also money.
Will go get some degreaser today.

X2 on cleaning everything off and seeing what is is really leaking. My leak a while back appeared to be the suction hose that attached to the bottom of the pump. After cleaning everything, I realised that the pump was leaking from the case gasket onto the hose beneath. I replaced both because the hose was very swollen from having fluid coating it, and getting that clamp on the hose is much easier with the pump out of the vehicle. I was able to replace both in the parking lot of my work over a slightly longer than hour lunch break.
