Default Had a Prepurchase inspection done today on an '04 S

Hi All,

I have recently been shopping for an '04 Disco II - and have been reading the boards and also talking to some helpful folks.

Today I had a local LR dealer inspect an '04 S that I was considering purchasing. The vehicle has 58,000 miles on it and is clean.

For informational purposes, I wanted to share what the inspection found:

Head gasket leaking both oil and coolant
Engine Ticking
Front timing cover leaking
Transmission cooler (or cooler line) is leaking

other than that there were a few minor things as well. Also, they mentioned that the Dexcool had been replaced by "green" coolant - and they advised to maintain the vehicle with Dexcool (or there is another "red" coolant - I cant remember the name they said). Personally, I will follow DiscoMike's advice outlined in the major service thread and replace the coolant accordingly when I do purchase a vehicle.

I am going to pass on this one as I dont think the owner will discount the sale price enough to make it attractive to me. But I wanted to throw this out there in case anyone has any comments that may be helpful to someone like me who is looking to purchase their first '04 Disco....

Thx

Very expensive fixer upper.Even if the price was discounted Or very time consuming depends on your mech ability. I would pass, Low miles and everything wrong sounds like PO did nothing but drive the s_ _ it out of it.

How much did the inspection cost? Repairs would have been in the thousands. You dodged a bullet. Wise investment.

So, if you plan on owning a Disco, you better learn how to work on it, how mechicanical are you?

Make an offer and then go find a new or rebuilt engine. Factor the cost of that into the offer price. I would not offer more than 1500 for it. If they say yes you have a project truck if they say no you keep looking.

with 58 K on the clock; if it had been maintained it should need any of that work.

Moved on. Drove another yesterday - had engine tick and owner reports that HG "weeps" - it is going to take some patience to find something suitable...
