I don't think you could find anyone who will pin them for you, maybe a Rover specialist but anyone else is going to think you are insane. They will all want to sell you a new engine and install that. You might find a machine shop willing to take you engine block and put top hat liners in, but that part of the job alone is going to be around $1000. The pinning job takes about 8 hrs to do in the truck. Good luck!

@robbygian like @Extinct said, it won’t be easy to find someone to pin your liners. It’s not exactly common practice anywhere but the D2 community.

That being said, it’s become a fairly accepted practice that is a practical solution to slipping liners. I’d ask around on the forum, maybe post a wanted ad in marketplace, and search the FB Groups. There’s someone who can do it for you but you may have to drive a ways.

As far as price goes, expect to pay a decent amount because whoever does it is taking on a big liability. They are literally drilling holes in your engine block so I can’t imagine it will be super cheap to pay someone.

Try to find someone who has done it several times before. You don’t want to be the guinea pig. It’s a pretty simple process, but in medical terms this would be a simple surgery but one wrong move with the scalpel it could go to hell in a hand basket.

Hopefully that helps? I’d expect to $1k or so. Top hat liners would cost A LOT more.

I am not surprised its an expensive job, I didn't know this was an exclusive thing in the D2 community like you both put it. Well, I just threw 1k into a set of new tires... not really in the place to throw that cash down now. Guess I will consider and save up some cash for a bit. I will just hope for the best for the time being

@robbygian there are many well documented cases of liners slipping on 03-04 Discos for a long long time. I’ve read posts where people said they’ve have the truck a decade and it was ticking when they bought it with relatively low miles.

Its certainly an odd situation, and the design and apparent manufacturing issues apparently create the perfect storm to allow it to happen.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about it unless you’re seeing high coolant temperatures, a loss of coolant, or something else is indicating an issue. If it’s otherwise healthy, then I’d just drive it.

Might be worth doing an oil pressure test to make sure the tick is not related to low oil pressure. That’s cheap and relatively easy/ well documented. Just need a $30-50 oil pressure test kit. Tons of good threads on the process.

@arains44 I notice I have to add a little bit of coolant to my reservoir every 3-4 months or so (depending if I take any long trips really). I was told it just burns some off with time because its a hot running engine. Do you think that is a worrying amount? Yeah, I should get a pressure testing kit. It is cheap enough.

What temperature does it start ticking? With the inline thermostat mod you can run a much cooler thermostat.

Unless you have a leak from a hose it shouldn’t lose any coolant. I’d drive it hard, get it real hot, then park it in your driveway or a garage abs leave it running with some cardboard under the front of the truck. See if you spot any drips of coolant. Find where those are coming from and you might have found your issue.

Always suspect a leak from a hose or the water pump before assuming internal issues.
