Yea I'm not mechanic just a driver. I found the code because The Auto Parts store checked it for free.

I tightened my cap which seems fine but the core is still on 3 days later Does it auto clear once a new cap is on it? How long does it take? I don't know much about those scanners, I just looked on Amazon for one. You mean something like that + phone software to clear a code? I guess maybe Autozone can clear it for free. I will just give them a call first. Thanks.

Rajod, as your car is an LR3, I don’t know the best scanner for you (this is the Discovery 2 section of the forum). You should ask in the LR3 section.

Ahhh sorry, yes I see I'm in D2 not D3. For what its worth. With the Ignition on run (but no engine running)I used a Veepeak OBDCheck BLE Bluetooth OBD II with a free android program called car scanner.
Had no idea what I was doing. plugged it in ran the phone software and hooked via blue too from with in the app (not the phones blue tooth pairing) it loaded. Went to diagnostic trouble code section and it had a "Clear" codes yes/no. I choose clear the codes. I unplugged it from the car then started the car POOF! no codes all looks good.
I drove around 40 miles and the gas cap code did not come back on Hope I'm out of the woods. I ordered a new gas cap just in case but not sure I really need it.

So once a code check engine light comes on it will stay on forever? I don't think it would have turned off, and if my gas cap was bad would it not turn back on? I'm guessing one time I did not screw that cap on all the way and it popped the code.

Then today the code reappeared.

I went back and checked the gas cap again, mind you, I was the one this time who last closed it... and sure enough! It was almost completely unscrewed just like before. What the heck is happening? Is it possible for the gas cap to become unscrewed and basically thread itself off?

We have a spare gas cap from a donor disco, so I'll swap that on and see if it helps. Weird though...
A big YES! It just happened to me. I had a engine code a few times and it said the gas cap. I checked it and it seemed fine. Cleared the code and it did not come back for months until today. Weather warmed up from 28 to maybe a wet 40 ish and I see my engine light on again. I go to fill up and I cant unscrew the cap its stuck. In reality it was not stuck it unscrewed itself so could have just pulled it straight off but I assumed it was on and when trying to turn a cap thats already unscrewed they will not turn any further making you think its stuck. The fix is probably a new gas gap.
