Default Head Gascket question

Leaking anti freeze on my 2000 DII (83k), so I take it to a local mechanic he says its the head gasket, he wont fix it tells me to take it to the dealer. They quote me about $3400 to fix. So now the beast is sitting outside my house and haven;t driven it in two days and I notice a puddle of fluid underneath it. If it was the head gasket would it leak just sitting there??

My 99 disco II never leaked anything, but my head gasket was blown(water in the oil) so 1600.00 later it was fixed, look at your oil!!!! and is it over heating????

They do not necessarily leak into the engine bank and mix with the oil. My head gaskets on 2000 DII started showing sign of seepage at about 80K. Finally I got to them at 106,500 miles. All the leaking was external, at the back of the block, with the right side (passenger) showing most of the expulsion.

No anti freeze in oil. It was starting to over heat obviously due to loss of fluids. But again, would it leak just sitting there??

The majority of head gasket failures I have heard of go out towards the rear of the engine, and depending on how the truck is sitting, yea, it wil leak just sitting there. The engine cools, and the metals contract, possibly making the leak worse. Where are you at? there is a decent list of independant Rover shops on rangerovers.net .

FYI head gasket failures are common. Look for about $1500 to repair.

Good Luck!

I am feeling your pain, I am in the middle of changing my head gaskets as well. Like you, none of the local mechanics will touch mine, so I forced to handle it myself. After pulling my heads, I discovered an eroded area where the leak originated. Thankfully, it was not a crack. The machine shop will be able to resurface the head and remove the pitted area. Good luck on yours.

Exjeep owner,
do not drive your truck till you can have it repaired or you can drop a sleeve and loose youe engine.
As for the price you were quoted, I am having the same job done later next week and was quoted $1350 plus any possible head inspection or resurfacing. You are getting screwd on this and need to shop around for a better deal.

I know, deferring the water leak for so long was rather irresponsible may have well ended-up with a blown engine. However, during the aprox. 26,000 miles, I had to periodicallymonitor and top-off the coolant level, which I did with proper pre-mix, and not just distilled water (I never use tap water for engine cooling). So in the end, all is OK, however, I would not recommend this practice to anyone. At a first sight of leaky head, a due diligent repair is the best way to preserve a valuable automobile.
