Default Head Gasket 02 Disco II

I'm about to start my first HG job on my 02 Discovery Series II and wanted to know if I should be looking out for anything specific. I know about the sleves that need to be checked for slippage once the heads are off but nothing specific besides that. I have done HG jobs before but this will be my first LR. I'm doing it right by getting the workshop manual for reference. I'll be updating the job as it goes along. Thanks guys

Download the Rave CD the shop manual is a lot easier to read that way. It jumps around a lot. When everything is out look at your camshaft, tappets, push rods for wear. Inspect your heads for buildup and have a machine shop inspect them and plane them. Clean everything you can, rocker covers, push rods, etc and lube with 5w-30 oil. It's not a terrible job, be gentle with your PAS pump or it will leak.

How many miles on your engine? Consider doing an engine flush prior to opening up the engine, give you something cleaner to tear into.
Consider buying your headgasket set and head bolts from Atlantic British along with a new t/stat. On a separate order, buy a set of 8 mm Magnacor wires if you have not already change your out.
Do you have a machine shop lined up that can check your heads? Don't resurface them if not needed.
While apart, inspect your rocker shaft, arms push rods and lifters for wear and replace as needed.
Good luck.

I have been reading alot about changing head gaskets on the Disco. Considering this is my first Land Rover to own and not knowing much about the vehicles it self. Do I need to consider doing a head gasket change. My disco just turned 100K and does'nt seem to have any overheating issues or oil leaks, etc.

Were the factory gaskets they used on these vehicles a piece of sh*t or is this a routine type maintenance for these vehicle. With all the small problems I have had with mine in just a short period of ownership, I'm wondering if I should sell the thing if its going to be a high maintenance vehicle to own.

Your's have probably already been done and as long as you stay on a 24 month schedule for changing your coolant, you should be fine.

DisoMike what is the best coolant or should I say ( recommended ) to use. I keep getting mixed ideas on what everyone is using and how some build up sludge, debri, add this to this, etc.... Can I use a just Prestone 50/50 or any other local auto store anti-freeze or is there a land rover brand that needs to be used.

Also how would I know if my head gaskets had been changed? Is there anyway to know but looking, I'm assuming not!

disco 2's take dexcool the orange coolant. do not use prestone the green coolant. if the two mix you will have jelly. although delicious on a sandwich its not so nice in your engine.
