Interesting you say the intake bolts were only finger tight. I just did my head gasket yesterday and noticed the same thing. I had a leak running down the back of the block that I couldn't explain, thought it was a head gasket, thus we pulled the head. Oh well I've got enough miles to replace it anyway. Yes you can use thread locker on the intake bolts, im sure as hell going to.
