When I put mine back on I just pulled the hood towards the front bumper as far as it would go and tightened. That gave it enough clearance to not ding anything. It looks right to me now, haven't noticed alignment problems.

remove the hood, but before you do it drill a 3/16 hole threw the hindge into the bottom of the hood.
Then when it is time to reinstall it you can just stick an ice pick in the hole and the hood will automatically line back up

Don't do this. If you dont feel confident enough to remove and re-install the hood definitely do not drill through your hinge.

As Disco Mike stated, outline the hinge w/ a marker before removal. Its very easy to re-align. Just don't tighten the four bolts and go slamming the hood closed. You may f-up your fenders. Ease it closed and check the lines on each respective fender to make sure they match. Done.

The hinge has structural properties why would you drill into it and remove material from it?

Took the advice of most here and removed the hood. Used a marker to outline the location of the hinges. It's sitting in the back of the shop hopefully where it will stay out of trouble while we do the head gaskets. It is a 2 man job to remove the hood. Thanks. Tom.

I'm actually in the process of replacing my head gaskets, the hardest part was getting the fan off of the water pump for me, which i was not able to do. I just took the pump and fan off as one unit after 2 hours of yanking on breaker bars. I didn't find it too difficult to get down to the heads though.
