Head gaskets, full paint job and powder coating before and after
This took a long time. Between the head gasket job done in my garage, everything taken off the truck for paint, all five rims, front and rear bumpers and roof rack and factory roof rails powder coated, getting the entire truck painted and getting everything back on was over a year. Oh and a power steering pump.
click and scroll through the pics, viewing in the thread doesn’t do it justice. Actually the after pics don’t do it justice! Haha. Outside compression leak #6 cylinder. Same exact place it blew 60k miles ago. Gasket blows on the block side, there is a defect but wasn’t really excited about pulling the block and having it decked. I can do head gaskets in my sleep so if I get 60k out of this set I’ll be pleased. Worst of the paint deterioration. The tops of the fenders and parts of the hood were headed in this direction. If you touched the hood or fenders you hand would be white. Almost everything off. Bareback Good god Holy shhhhh Nice *** Fin
This truck is not my daily, I could have knocked it out much quicker but honestly my enthusiasm for the project ebbed and flowed.
Every piece of plastic except the side view mirrors is new. I didn’t get Land Rover drip rail trim though, hard to source all the way around. Used 1/4 inch rubber trim with 3M adhesive and it looks great. New badges all the way around, I found the only NEW OE in the plastic series II badge on the planet in the UK (only new one available at the time). New fender turn indicators, removed and resealed the sunroofs, new windshield, new windshield cowl, Discovery I wiper arms.
I gotta ask ... what did the paint job cost, given that you removed all the trim, etc.?
$2.3k and yes it’s a Maaco paint job. I’ll probably get hate on for that BUT the paint work looks pretty good. Is it as good as a factory paint job? NO. Are there any defects that jump out at you? NO. I needed almost no bodywork so that helped the price. The paint was so bad on the roof, hood and fenders that I had to do something. I was particularly worried about rust setting in on the roof. Had to pull the trigger and get the whole thing done.
One of the Maccos here in Memphis has a pretty good reputation for the price point. Would I take my wife’s Lexus GX there? Not in a million years. Would I take a 25 year old Discovery with a book value of $2000 (generous) ? Yes.
What does jump out to me is how good the factory roof rails look after powder coating( ricks powder coating). So glad I did that. I paid $60 to have them stripped and coated and maybe $5 for the new gasket kit when I reinstalled them.
That is awesome, love the white. You should powder coat the wheels white. If you don't love them, Ill swap you for another set.
Huh, I can honestly say going white never crossed my mind. That would have looked interesting to say the very least. I have set of 5 16” that I am about the get powder coated in the factory silver color. I think if I went white they’d have to be steel 16’s.
I love love love threads like this! Very well done. Kinda like my corny “build” thread, this is an example of what some patience and dedication can do for a D2. They are so ridiculously addictive. This is motivation to keep going on mine once I get home (although the Giverny will probably be a couple years in the making to get it to this nice of a state).

No hate here! It's a 25-year old truck!
What I don't understand is why paint jobs have become so expensive. Even Maaco.
Redrover has a lot of typical clear coat faults on the bonnet and roof, and I've been debating whether to have those areas repainted or let them age (un)gracefully.
