Default Headgaskets upside down?

We had just finished replacing the headgaskets on my 2000 D2, engine now runs hot, temp not to the red yet but damn near. So far found the t-stat might be bad, found lower hose is still cold. But looking at the old headgaskets, I noticed there is a 'top' stamped on one of them. Are the left and right gaskets the same and can they be installed upside down? I will put in a factory t-stat instead of the aftermarket I got from Worldpac and see what happens. Feel free to chime in. Pressure test cooling system, and performed block check for leaks, so far so good.

They are interchangeable but there is a top and a bottom. Also make sure you bleed the coolant properly you probably have an air pocket. If you temp needle even moves it means is pretty darn hot, don't run it too long like that.

Make sure the small hose on the top left of the radiator is flowing coolant into the reserve tank. Look under the cap for a small streem of coolant when running. If you dont see it,look for blockage at the radiator where the hose connects and at the reserve tank. This hose moves trapped air from the radiator to the tank,if its plugged its hard to bleed..Also a good way to check for water pump flow.

Thanks guys, I will bleed again and see. I also spoke to a shop that specializes in Land Rovers and he suggested the same thing, his shop uses the same t-stats and had never had a problem with it failing. Will update after bleeding again.

Another update: removed t-stat and installed known working old one. Bleed system again, engine ran hot within 2 miles of driving. No waterfall sound noticed during roadtest from vents, could there still be another air bubble? Lower radiator hose is barely warm, heat is hot from vents, possible radiator blockage? Getting very frustrating now.
