Default headlight disassembly for restoration

I want to replace my disco II Headlights. They look awful and are terribly foggy. After shopping the price of a new headlight assembly I'm feeling much more attracted to a restoration project. I UNDERSTAND that restoring headlight exteriors CORRECTLY and EFFECTIVELY requires various sand paper grits and proper polishing. My headlight issues are on the inside of the lease, not the outside. Anyone every disassemble the headlight and is it practical? thanks!!
