Default Headliner out: what now?

So; I had to pull the headliner on my 2000 Disco2 SD; no sunroof, I had to pull it to replace the RF Receiver (which solved my key coding issues as discussed in another thread). But now I need to address my roof leak; and since the headliner is already out, what better time...right?

i have all the interior trim out except the two in front on either side of the windshield. Do I need to pull those to address the leak problem? Do I need to pull any exterior pillars to address it? How do I determine if the roof drains are clogged or damaged? Can I somehow clean them by possibly running a thin wire through them? If so, where do they terminate? Outside or inside, or in the door jam?

does anyone have any pictures I can use as reference material?

My headliner is out on my 2000 right now. Living parallel lives, although my leaks were both sunroofs.

Do you know where the leak(s) are?

I would remove your interior a-pillars. Lets you see both sides of windshield and upper/lower windshield corners from inside the truck.

I ran mine through a touchless car wash with a friend in back, me up front, and we looked at every seam etc while in the wash. I found both sunroofs leaking (everywhere. drain tubes, internal and external seals), a leak at the top left corner of the windshield (which has since been replaced) and a leak around the air intake under the cowl panel on the passenger side, bottom of windshield.

I don't know everything but having just been through "my car is an aquarium" myself, I'd speculate the leaks could be:

- Sunroofs (which I believe you don't have)
- Drip rails that run down the side of the truck, most likely at each front corner. You may see cracked body seam sealer. Or missing body seam sealer. This was evident on mine. You may need to remove the drip rail front pieces and side drip rails. To remove the drip rail pieces you should pull the exterior A-Pillars btw. but... You will likely break them and buckle up when you see the pricing for replacement parts. A pillars are 80-100 or so, drip rail plastics are like 50-60-80 bucks each piece ! I pull these carefully off junkyard cars whenever I can.
- Roof rail bolts (2 on each side) -- I read about this but mine don't leak.
- Windshield (specifically top left / right corner, less likely bottom corners or anywhere else
- Under the cowl pass side there is an air intake that is bolted in to the firewall. It has a foam-ish seal. I used a good non-silicone sealant to seal around mine after taking cowl off. You can see pics in this post -- https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...illars-101584/. This is where my Disco was leaking, a slight dripping on the passenger floor mat. Note. Mine was NOT leaking through the air intake, it was leaking AROUND the air intake which is why I sealed it up like there. There are a ton of other posts about people creating little metal shields over the air intake to help there too.
-Your front door seals might also leak btw. If they're super thrashed.

Here are some reference photos of mine today. All of my upper interior trim and headliner's out.

One of the front roof rail bolts/nuts

Where mine had a small leak. To really see everything you need to take off the front drip rail trim, but it fits UNDER the exterior A-pillar, so you have to remove that to get the drip rail molding off. You can pry it out, but more likely to break.

Bottom corner of windshield. I read about leaks here. Mine was fine.

Pass A Pillar exterior

Showing where I sealed. With non silicone sikaflex 221 black sealant. PS the janky towel and tape is there bc of the fire smoke and ash in Portland OR now, cowl is going back on soon.

Showing the cracked body seam sealer. Mine doesn't leak but I'm watching it. My roof needs a repaint so will deal with replacing this sealer at that time.

Interior w/ A-pillar removed

Interior w/ A-pillar removed. This lets you see if windshield is leaking at top corners very easily.

Oh and BTW if you don't have sunroofs, you don't have any roof drains inside the car.

amazing, and much appreciated breakdown of the answers to my questions!

what tool do you use, or is suggested to be used to remove the A pillars?

thanks so much

For the A-pillars, just pull toward the steering wheel starting at the top. The only thing that's attached to them is the speaker wire, if you have tweeters. There are just three clips. Top, middle, bottom.
