Default Headliner removal.

Simple question really.

How long / complicated of a job is removing the headliner?

Thinking of painting it but I'm kinda put off by tearing the interior apart.

I have done 3. I got removal down to about 15 minutes. But that's with a beer in one hand.

Seriously, it’s that easy?? I’ve been eyeballing that project because I wanted to do a little bit of sound deadening while my headliner was being re-done so I thought I would remove it myself and take it to a trim shop. I was looking at all the pieces to take off and to me it looked more like a 1/4 bottle of bourbon and a can of snuff (I have no problem with either of these time metrics). Am I missing something or do you have a source for the magical beer you drink while doing it?

Yeah it's easy. First time took me about 45 minutes because of being careful about laying out parts and fasteners. A few tips-

- use a magnetic head phillips head for those 12 screws holding up the front plastic. They go in straight up and down and are easy to drop otherwise.

- fold up your second row seats to make getting the headliner out the back easier.

- get a piece of coat hanger wire and put a little j hook in the end to pop the covers for the sunvisor clips.

- have a helper to pull the assembly out the back w/o kinking.

- leave the rubber strip around the rear moon roof till last so it holds the back up.

- have a trim tool to pull those 4 plug fasteners on the rear panels. I use a garden weeder that I bent in a vise but a plastic tool would be less likely to scratch the plastic.

Good Luck

Also, if your truck has rear A/C don't try to remove the rear air vents before removing the headliner. They come out with it.

X1 ......... good tip.

Also replace the one or two sunroof seals when removing the headliner, there are 2 seals to each sunroof and ensure you clear and test the sunroof overflows for integrity of which there are 2 per sunroof attached to the tray. Use genuine LR sunroof seals and marine grade heatproof mastic. I also installed fireproof 23 layer alu and polypropylene insulation above the headliner to reduce solar gain but you must ensure it doesn't cause any shorts to the light fittings etc. Recovering the headliner is awkward but IMO worth it as opposed to painting it. It depends whether you have a family road D2 or an occasional offroader.
