Default Headliner & Sunroof Seal

Headliner is starting to sag on passenger side so I was thinking of doing the sunroof seals in the process. Can anyone tell me where to buy and what? I checked AB and they don't carry the seal. Nothing is leaking, but with my luck I'd get the new liner up and a month later the sunroof would leak.

Ebay. Buy only LR OEM as it's not a job you wanna do twice.

There a 2 seals, one between the frame and the roof shell and one between the frame and the glass sunroof. The one between the frame and roof shell requires a mastic seal also and the best stuff and most flexble I have found is marine silicon mastic. You have to ensure the roof shell and frame are meticulously cleaned of ALL the old mastic first.

The one between the roof and the glass, does the headliner need to be removed to install it? Since they aren't leaking, I'm only interested in replacing seals/drain tubes/etc that you would need to remove the headliner to access/replace. I checked eBay and it looks like about $150-$200 per sunroof (2 seals and 1 drain tube per sunroof)!

Another thing is will this require a lot of skill? The guy doing the headliner offered to do the seals at the same time, but he's not a rover or even body specialist...he does upholstery.

AFAIK you can remove the lower glass to frame seal without removing the headliner (I did mine though when I dropped the headliner for sagging repairs) the upper seal, frame to roof body shell, will require the headliner out for certain. This upper seal is one of the major sources of sunroof leaks along with plastic drain tube breakages/leaks or blocked drain tubes with the frame gutter overflowing. You mention only ONE drain tube but there is TWO on each sunroof, one each side at the front of the frame.

Is this a difficult job, well removing and replacing the headliner isn't difficult but not a doddle. Replacing the seals, upper frame seals is time consuming and messy. Replacing the lower seals, frame to glass is easy. If this upholstery guy reupholsters headliners he has probably done the whole works a few times but it's worth asking the question of him. The job is a mixture of bodyshop work on the sunroofs and upholstery on the headliner but rarely a mechanics job.

UG...$500 in parts can't be right, and that doesn't even count the headliner. This is seriously $0.50 worth of rubber and plastic we're talking about. Anyone know a store besides e-bay that sells everything? I'd rather not roll the dice with 2-3 different sellers.

If you want to reseal the sunroof to body seal you only need a couple of tubes of caulking. To replace the glass to sunroof seal you need p/n EEQ500010. You can get then for about $45 each.

If you need to repair a broken drain, you need some plastic epoxy and a plastic barb_ed (needed to add the underscore because the forum was replacing it with ******) fitting from a hardware store.

Land Rover Monthly had an article covering removing and resealing the sunroofs.

If it ain't leaking don't try and fix it. It's like stripping out the HG before it's ready. Might go for another 40k.

Sure, if you have time or money to burn.

Headliner is a pain, but isn't a complete nightmare. Plenty of write ups. I mean, to get to the sun roofs.

Maybe your drain tubes and seals are fine. Or, you fix the seals, put it back together and bust a drain tube screwing it all back up.

If it helps. My sunroof leak took about 4 hours, and $7 in decent gooey stuff to fix. After 3 days of diagnosis

Hey all. So I JUST got a 2004 Disco. Its is in very nice shape but I too have the headliner issue.

Not to crash your party Dan7 but I have some questions too.

Should I be replacing these seals when I get the head liner fixed? As I am in Southern California I do not know if this car will ever see much rain. The Disco will be garage kept for the foreseeable future.

How would I know if the seals are already leaking?

Should I test them and what would I look for?

What type of repair specialist do I need to complete the headliner/seals repair?

Thanks!
