HELP! (Cruise Control)
I know there are tons of posts on this but I am having issues other than vacuum lines. I actually replaced all the vaccum lines about two weeks ago. It worked great until yesterday.
I took the Rover to the dealer to have the key chain programmed. Left the dealership and set the cruise on the freeway. I made it about 10 miles and the cruise just suddenly stopped working. I checked all the lines which of course were good. So I went to a salvage yard and tried a new pump and a new dash swich... neither worked. I guess it could be a relay or the brake pedal switch.
First of all, where is the relay? I wanted to check that while I was at the salvage yard with parts to spare but I have no idea where it is. And second question... if it's not that, what is it??
I made the drive from Salt Lake City, UT to Afton, WY today without cruise and it was NOT FUN!
Please help if you can give any advice.
Thanks in advance,
Erick

OK I just found a detailed post in here with many replies. I ran out to the truck and check the actuator up by the throttle linkage. When I depress it and hold my thumb over the vacuum line inlet it does hold a vacuum. Also when I turn the switch on and off I can hear the relay by the glove box.
I feel like I'm talking to myself.
Turns out it was the cruise ECU. Ran to the salvage yard and pulled one, put it in and it works great!. I also changed the pump... when I ran mine, the motor sounded pretty rough.
The cruise works like a charm now! (knock on wood)

You will need to take the glove box out... then just take a look just to the right of center in the glove box hole. It is attached to a bigger unit, I'm guessing that's the main computer for the car. There is a bank of relays just below. My series of troubleshooting went... hoses, vacuum pump, switch, actuator, relay, ECU. My pump was working but it sounded rough so I changed it. Everything else was ok, when I plugged the ECU in, the cruise started working again. Just plug it in and just let it hang down while you take it for a spin... getting the two little nuts back on is a pain in the a$$. No need bolting the new one in if it's not bad. Check this link out to an ECU on eBay, might save you some money...

Erratically
Hi Graham,
Erick (97DISCOIDAHO) provided a good explanation of how to get to the box. If you have one in hand, it helps to find the bad one installed in your Disco. My ECU started turning off erratically, then failed completely. I did the following to determine that it was the ECU:
1) Check all vacuum lines for leaks (and no connects)
2) Check the brake switch
3) Check the Cruise control pump
4) Check the relay
You'll need a hand pump to check the vacuum of the system (and the brake switch vacuum). I hot wired my vacuum pump to turn it on to check it (it has a three wire plug going into it, but I can't remember which wires I used for power and ground). I also did the same for the relay. All that was left was the ECU. I find that on Land Rovers, usually the most expensive part fails first, so that is a good place to start looking
I bought one off eBay used, but British Atlantic and other catalogs sell this part new.
Good luck,
Tim

Quick Question. Can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour.
In Park, not moving (obviously), I hit the Cruise Master Arm switch and I hear the relay click. I turn it off, hear it click again. I then put the car in drive, hold footbrake, and hit the Master Arm again, no click. This normal?
Thanks
