Default Help! Inspection cover on gear box missing

Hi All,

I am looking at buying a replacement Disco II for one totaled by a drunk driver (not me!). I have found what seems to be a good 2004 at a dealership with low miles (55K). Crawling under it though I found a two minor oil leaks and that the cover for the inspection point on the gear box was missing. Everything inside the case was clean but I am worried about what troubles this could produce. I would like to buy this one as the engine is in the best shape. I have looked at 8 others so far and almost all others have many leaks and condensation and milky goo in oil cap.

Quick advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad

Personally, I would be more worried WHY it's missing than the fact that it is missing. Not an area people just go poking around for no reason.

If it's clean in there(use a flashlight), I wouldnt be worried about any issues arising from it missing, but would replace it if bought.

Hi Kenk,

Thanks for the timely response. The car is at a dealership which has done extensive maintenance on it and was then turned over to them after their last round of work (fixing many of the leaky seals). I did talk with the mechanic who worked on it, and he says that he must have forgotten to put it back on.

That alone makes me a little leery of the work ...

I assume he's talking about the round torque converter inspection cover on the automatic gear box, not the big square cover on the transfer case.

Default Yes, round cover

Hi All,

I am referring to the round inspection cover.

My apologies for not giving an accurate description. I was looking through the RAVE manual trying to find the actual name for it but never found it.

I can't tell all of you guys how much I appreciate this site though. It helped me through some of the fixes on my old Disco, but I am certainly still a newbie when it comes to fixing these things and the correct terminology.
